Hard to justify all the pain and effort that go into starting a new country unless the One Commandment is a significant perceived departure from, and incompatible with, existing moral conditions

“24/7 internet bad”, “carbs bad” for example just don’t sound ambitious enough. These groups would have litte trouble carving out space for themselves within existing societies with little to no friction.

I’m skeptical about the idea of any one moral improvement, aka One Commandment, as a sufficient pre-condition for a new startup society. The quality of the moral improvement seems key here.

It’s a good book. Elon seems very intense and nuts, but in a charming and mostly necessary if sometimes (self-)destructive way. I’m rooting for him.

That’s a cool souvenir! Never doubted you of course, was just curious about Walter Isaacson — I only know him through his writing (which I find terrific!), but know nothing about the man himself. Just saw yesterday that there’s a new Lex Fridman podcast with him, so might have a listen and attempt to remedy that.

This is a great history of the digital age if technology makes your heart sing — it starts with Babbage & Ada Lovelace, covers the invention of the computer, transistor, microchip, the internet, personal computer, software, and ends with the web up to and including Google. Terrific writing by Walter Isaacson too.

It’s all tribes. Not ideologies. Not countries. Not borders. Not even leaders. Just tribes.

At times, it reads like the author is writing an ode rather than an account of a human’s life, but frankly, it’s understandable — Johnny von Neumann was of a rare breed, a true titan of science.
