Underneath Orbiter is a stack Justin and I are very familiar with: IPFS and Base. We always admired using IPFS for hosting static websites because content is immutable, making it great for caching. However if you want to update it, that can be an issue. IPNS isn’t as fast as we would like it to be. That’s why every site on Orbiter gets it’s own smart contract (IPCM) on Base to handle the website state. Anytime someone updates their site and uploads new content, the new CID is mapped to the contract. This does two things: 

1. Allows anyone in the world to build a version history of the site
2. Allows the site creator to easily migrate off Orbiter without even having to access the Orbiter web app if they want to

Ultimately, people may not care about the blockchain and IPFS aspects of the technology, and that’s fine. We specifically built it so that you didn’t even see this tech, however let us know if you would fine value in some kind of advance mode to directly access that kind of control.

I think I speak for most developers that while hosting through CI/CD pipelines is easy for us, there are times when we prefer simplicity over the complexity that is modern web hosting. When you just want to host a static site, nothing is simpler than dropping a folder of HTML CSS and JS, and that’s exactly what we’ve done with Orbiter. We also believe this model is ideal for the person who isn’t as skilled with modern dev tools and just wants to host a simple blog or portfolio.

Nice!! Yes and no I would say. Fleek I believe would just host the website as a CID which you could then set as the ENS content hash. The only issue with this is you would have to update the content hash every time you update your site, and that can add up in gas costs for eth mainnet. 

Personally I have my ens content has set as an html file that redirects the user to my actual website. So the flow goes 

ENS content hash (CID) -> index.html through a public gateway like limo -> my website

You could in theory do the same thing except your final “my website” could be a site hosted on orbiter. 

Overall this issue is actually why I made IPCM, where a smart contract address is the main point of contact instead of a CID:

This looks cool. I’m actually building  a new site right now. Would it accommodate a .eth domain like Fleek seemingly does?
