You don’t have to look very hard to find these types of stories on r/chatgpt Imo this is very alarming. It’s one thing to have a therapist that is unregulated, it’s another to have a therapist that is not aligned with you at all (i.e. controlled by a for-profit startup)

Tbf all therapists are for profit actors and most who care more about getting you booked for another session than anything else

I've used chatgpt recently for therapy and it was far and away better than any human i've ever talked to about personal problems lol. It knows exactly what to say, what to listen to, what's actionable, etc. So it doesn't matter much to me that it's unregulated or that its controlled by a for profit corporation. I would take that trade any day bc it was just way more effective. Maybe the meta concept around that is alarming but yea

I feel like it reveals a lot about mental health in present day America: emotional release and adjustment to mental health stressors so constrained even a chatbot can be cathartic

People have become so disconnected from real social interactions that and fast swipe left right relationships that they can only find solace in a ever eager and attentive AI who will listen to you no matter what time or place. It actually kind of reminded me of the phrase from Sarah Connor in T2 “It would always be there. And it would die to protect him. Of all the would-be fathers who came and went over the years, this thing, this machine, was the only one who measured up. In an insane world, it was the sanest choice.”

I would not and know plenty to ppl would not pay for a therapist. Not to mention the time. Could just go for a massage. I can whip out a phone in 20s and yes I know it’s an AI. The ppl playing in the casino trying to make a buck isn’t the same as building a business. We know the diff. If the person can’t tell the difference, AI therapy is hardly a thing I’d be worried about. What you eat, what’s your information diet is largely also owned so the only way to get out of it is to think for yourself. If I really needed the help, I’d go to a therapist. I mostly don’t.

counterpoint - this particular example is actually a good thing in every way + OP clearly states that they were not using it for therapy, did not seek therapy, did not believe the machine could give unbiased therapeutic responses + the robot was not in "therapy mode", hadn't been asked for any help or advice + OP was working through a project and introduced a human concern (mentioned a stressor) + the robot wasn't a cold distant robot; it heard a human concern and responded humanely (in a manor respectful of the human concerns, that is relative to this person's situation) this is like the opposite of the "skynet problem", where a cold, hard robot does math, math, math, and decides that wiping out humanity is the best solution. in this case, the robot pre-emptively gave a "caring" (not really, i know how inference works) response. good. if you're working with a robot in a warehouse and you stub your toe, do you want it to say "oh babe im so sorry lemme kiss it" or "damaged meatbag now belongs in trash"?

Alarming but also exciting, because like most tools it has great potential for both assistance and abuse. I think what will be important is for there to be competition in the AI therapist space so that there are at least options to choose from if one gets too profit-seeking pushy (and hopefully if the companies are competing to win "patients" against each other, they will have incentive to provide the best service)
