algo feeds are basically mind control technology might unironically warrant some degree of regulation in its current state and is a vulnerability that should be addressed in the next iteration of online social

agreed, but the alternative to algo feeds is unclear. people prefer them to chrono feeds past a certain number of connections. credible neutrality def needs to rethink recommendation algorithms. and, at very least, provide transparency. i think the super notification—notify me when users is posting—is a pretty good signal to build upon. i also like the idea of being able to pick algorithms like thematic playlists. but the scariest thing is that you have to exercise some degree of paternalism (registration, or building products that are good for people), which is so antithetical to the crypto vibe. and no one wants to do that. it’s like social sugar. people will choose to manipulative algo over the one that’s good for them.

Liking this post to get more algo mind control posts in my feed. Also depressing thought: I might like FC better than X simply because MM isnt yet as good as X at controlling my mind.

generally skeptical of govt deciding what I can see in my feed (or the benefit of govt involvement here) my hope is that decentralized social will also lead to decentralized (and more transparent) algos and perhaps algo choice. also hoping that this model eventually beats the centralized ones, but that's not gonna happen without this alternative having a sustainable business model

In regards to children, someone said it was ridiculous to think that you as a parent can compete against thousands of masters and PhD scientists curating an algorithm to perfectly keep your kids engaged. Of course, the same is true of yourself. At some point, it's predatory and harmful in the same ways smoking was prior to regulation.

Tech elites put a lot of effort into limiting their kids’ screen time while building the mental crack addicting everyone else’s kids.

that's the reason why tik tok was supposed to be banned because the country controlling the algorithm is outside our jurisdiction and it can be a powerful tool for manipulation

I think about this all the time. Most things we see on our feeds today are a “pay-to-play” basis which means the people that are seen most popular on feed are actually paying the social media the content and money that the algorithm rewards. The algorithm is based on what that media company is wanting.
