i went from being very into self-improvement stuff, then to thinking it was all corny slop for a few years, and now i'm back into it but through the lens of self-study. i see it now as just trying to get better at the meta-game of living, which is an infinite game

I have found the most personal growth thru self study and reflection. But, I’ve had a lot of time locked up to do that type of thing. A lot of people never even consider this type of thing. They just go thru life from one reality show to the next.

David Foster Wallace wrote about how our culture fetishizes values and self-improvement. eventually we get annoyed and roll our eyes at it. later we realize: damn, these simple rules are actually valuable and hard to follow.

I did the same with food. Cutting out almost all processed foods and trying to make a majority of meals myself (daily or with meal prep.) Getting a big freezer is one of the healthiest things I ever did, it also paid for itself in a few months.

right? I found it interesting how the self-improvement content is recyclable, the same messages were being conveyed back in our parents lives and our grandparents today it's easy to see that the industry is optimized for profits; there is only so much to know about ways to improve one's way of living
