The official demonym of somebody residing in the United States of America is in fact 'American'.  How else would you call somebody living in the United States?  For people living in Canada, the demonym is Canadian, etc, etc

I think non-US people make this a *much* larger issue than it actually is.

The thing is, there's no continent called 'America', which specifically refers to the USA. It's North America and South America. 'The Americas' is also acceptable. Literally nobody anywhere refers to Argentinians as Americans.

Agree that people born in the USA are American.

It's just that a subset has the same name as its superset.

What most Americans don't get is that the superset, with the same name, exists, they even deny it.
