I think Google is as good or better at the security, but ultimately their business model requires more compromises.

The article paints a different picture? Feels like when it's convenient to lock out competitors, Apple "cares about privacy". When it's inconvenient, Apple "cares about UX".

Though being honest, I don't feel either Apple nor Google deserve our generous reads at this point.

I think Apple has been struggling with the trade off between having the high security of E2EE iCloud and having lots of people permanently lock themselves out of their iCloud accounts (and the resulting bad press from this). Having this as a dedicated non-default feature for the enthusiasts is probably the sweet spot.
