Crypto nerds aren’t cool right now so no one wants to join a network full of us. Need cozy corners full of non-crypto people and crypto UX obfuscation first.

It won't take off with clones of existing web2 social apps but when the inevitable next big social app is built on top of something like Lens

It has. FT, FC, TON, Degen, Perl, Pump.fun, Time.fun, etc. Builders are working their way through the idea maze to find the killer apps. We'll have 2-3 breakout apps over the next year or two. Then it'll look preordained in hindsight. But crypto is too big now for them to carry the whole market, which is why it feels different than DeFi Summer or 2021 NFTs.

Dans answer. Most content is geared towards Web3 folks, but of course not all. A client that focuses on normie content and channels may do well. But it’s going to need distribution (might require a big player to come in and do that).

Normies don't have a reason to use it yet. Marketplace made Facebook more than a social media. Instagram is a virtual magazine. Twitter is for breaking news. Reddit for Q&A. I believe Farcaster will have its day, could be channels turning into businesses, could be composable apps in frames! Or the next feature

there is no way for a casual person to get excited about it. Read all the posts on the failure of the twitter to mastodon migration - the issue is exactly the same! People don't care about protocols, they care about their friends and about how much fun they have.

the most interesting people that are also the very best at social media are so addicted to engagement that they cant start over at zero for a few weeks or months. I dont know anyone that likes casting into the abyss but they dont like it even more than normal people. Watched it happen here since feburary. Have been seeing really great visual content people fade away because the algo is designed to boost a different kind of superuser and they didnt want to adapt to it.

Just a matter of time. When the majority of users know how to code + they’re super powered by AI tools, the limitations of closed platforms will be much more palpable. https://packets.substack.com/p/the-bull-case-for-open-platforms
