Never. I’m not sure who is older, but if me, Obama/McCain was divided. Nothing like the current state imo. Both Obama and McCain were gentlemen.

Before my time, but I'd say 1968 was quite a lot more divisive.

Politics? No it is pretty bad. But it’s total fabrication that the people are divided. The loudest & most extreme 1% on both sides control the narrative.

Never, the current state of affairs makes anything in the past look like child's play. We are staring authoritarianism right in the face at this juncture. I make the argument that we can trace some of this back to the way this country was formed, that is to say on unequal terms. Some founding fathers argued for abolition to be written into the constitution but it was not to be. In addition, Alexander Hamilton wrote in 1792, "When a man unprincipled in private life[,] desperate in his fortune, bold in his temper … is seen to mount the hobby horse of popularity … It may justly be suspected that his object is to throw things into confusion that he may ‘ride the storm and direct the whirlwind."

Social, fake news, populist politicians and misleading headlines fueled this. And it's like that almost in every country. Even in countries with multiple parties it all boils down to conservative vs liberals. France for instance both their right and left sides are very extremist near to the point they won't be able to even live in the same country. Same thing in my country (Colombia) it's like if we were enemies with insults even physical assaults time to time. The worst part is that centrists always have to choose between one extremist party giving them even more power.

No. Not even close. But keep in mind politicians used to beat each other with canes and stab each other in congress so historically speaking things aren’t at their worst.

People got sick of Jimmy Carter. Very much like Biden. High inflation. Weak on Terrorism. Seemed like a dumb ass. Then you had Reagan who was a stud. Very similar vibes to 2024.
