is there a panel of French aristocrats who decide what each new item's gender is? Curious how they figure this out, seems... tricky.

I’m native French and for the life of me I cannot articulate any rule in relation to why some nouns are masculine and others feminine. It looks completely arbitrary and I’ve just unquestioningly learned the gender of every word alongside the vocabulary itself. There are even words where to this day I’m not sure I get it right (like “icône” which I use in the feminine)

She is a lady -- though now it makes me think. Then again she is a lady because machines are female... washing or otherwise. And for that fact there is a male counterpart: le lave linge vs la machine a laver. A new vista has been opened to me -- thank you @robrecht
