Only keep files that spark joy! Jokes aside, I remember using Hazel for macOS years ago to clean out my download files based on rules. Once I started going through different work laptops and personal laptops at a faster pace I could manage, that went out the window and I just dump my download folder into my NAS which has several _unsorted (work laptop 2020) folders that are just collecting digital dust.

I’m also hoping to find solutions to this. Just to piggyback off of this, I’m also looking for regular life organization tips if any of you have those to add.

For photos at least, I find it easier to stay organised when I have a dumping ground specifically for photos and then take an hour or so monthly to sort them. I know I won't sort it on the moment of download, so it's good to at least be honest about it. Also use tree size software for data cleanup, really helps you see what takes up all the space!
