I was all in on Railway, but I've had way too many frustrations with it. Things that SHOULD just work often don't and debugging is hard since you don't have access to the shell console for the server (which originally I thought was a great thing). I've moved as much of my backend code to Cloudflare workers and if I need long-running processes, I'm back on Digital Ocean.

I'm hoping none of the Pinata engineering team reads my casts because late in 2023 and early 2024 I was pushing for us to move to managed services like Railway to help us ship faster. I think it could have worked, but we would have run into lots of problems. Plus that downtime incident.

I like the idea of railway but they had some pretty bad downtime last year and I had to do an emergency migration to another provider at 4am one time

I’m still scared but I do it and you’re right, I learn every time.

I keep going back to Digital Ocean...all of my longest-running apps are on Digital Ocean.

People are scared of DevOps but learn a little and you have more resilient systems.

As an example, for Orbiter, we use digital ocean for setting up nginx configs for each site with a custom domain and issuing ssl certs. Granted that's about more than long-running processes (we need access to disk). But I also use DO for cron jobs and background processes or API endpoints I know will take a long time to return.

For my own projects? Nothing. Pinata uses Terraform and Ansible depending on the environment and functionality.

What do you use for DevOps? Ansible or terraform?

DO is great, and you can do everything there. I prefer to launch APIs as Cloudflare workers though. You get the benefit of cost savings (usually) and effectively infinite scale (if that matters to you). Plus the developer experience is top-notch imo.

what is an example of something you do in cloudflare workers? i run everything on VPSs on DO and feel that im missing something lol

living on Railway rn, but probably will move back to Cloudflare everything once their container platform is live
