Happy Valentine's Day, book-loving friends! Let's talk love stories, however you define it. 

What's your favorite? Or if you're bad at favorites (me), what's your most recent favorite?

But also it's a story about desperation and how helpless we are in the face of love. I can totally relate to the hypervigilance and fear that can get tangled up in very strong feelings, and uncertainty about your place in someone else's life.

As I understand it, Highsmith was known for her psychological thrillers, and didn't want to be known for writing a love story, especially one between two women. 

Hence "Claire Morgan."

Mine is The Price of Salt by Patricia Highsmith. This quote, for one thing:

"I feel I am in love with you...and it should be spring. I want the sun throbbing on my head like chords of music. I think of a sun like Beethoven, a wind like Debussy, and birdcalls like Stravinsky. But the tempo is all mine."

Count of monte cristo is my all time fave. 

Although typically regarded as a revenge story, ultimately the motive is a deep love (that's taken from the protagonist).

Totally Valentine’s Day material! I like this very specific take on a love story. 

Also these two are new to me, and they sound brilliant, so I’m especially happy.

My favorite love stories are the ones that are disguised as gritty noir. Stories like Michael Farris Smith’s Desperation Road and David Joy’s Where All Light Tends To Go. 

Not exactly Valentine’s Day material I guess 😂

That is the best kind of book surprise! What in particular did you like about it?

My most recent favourite was November 9 by a Colleen Hoover. It was a book that took me by surprise, I didn’t expect to like it as all but enjoyed it a lot over all. Very easy read. 🥰

I briefly looked over this book and found it amusing that one of the characters shares my name and is set in the town where I was raised. 😆 It remains on my reading list, pending the completion of some more serious reads.

i don’t usually read love stories but recently read ‘all about love’ by Bell Hooks, and it was really nice and insightful.

I really like "Her", the movie. It's about someone who falls in love with an AI. Highly recommend

When I have tears in my eyes, that’s the kind of love I want to feel when I end a book. 

Unreasonable Hospitality was the last one I remember that made my feel like that.
