Can someone ELI5 EIP-4844? Should I expect mainnet ETH transactions to get cheaper?

If normal transactions are cars on a freeway, 4844 is a parallel cargo train track for special kinds of transactions used for L2's. Before, we'd transport them using normal trucks on the same highway as the cars, after we can put them on cargo trains. Choo choo.

it’s effectively a gas limit increase takes L2 gas usage out of mainnet execution should expect slightly cheaper L1 txns and much cheaper L2 txns

It helps L2 scale and be cheaper. L1 primary fee market will decouple from L2. I recommend this specific timestamp of my conversation with Jesse: https://youtu.be/5C9RtjXyEe4?t=1738&si=FdTC13-d--Enz8lD

ELI5 of EIP-4844 - Users can now store data (blobs) for a short time (18 days) on a separate part of the network. This is enough time to check for fraud on L2s. Since it's temporary it's cheaper than storing data forever on the main network

allows L2s to post data with an alternate fee structure. it essentially gives this type of data its own fee market that doesn’t impact the rest of the network. will reduce L1 fees indirectly as users will not be competing with L2s for gas.

I think it's only for layer 2 - the cost of submitting layer 2 transactions to mainnet will be cheaper, hence making layer 2 transactions cheaper. I don't think there's any significant benefit for mainnet transaction. https://consensys.io/blog/ethereum-evolved-dencun-upgrade-part-5-eip-4844 https://www.eip4844.com/

its only L2, but even then as the price of eth goes up the transaction price also goes up in $ value so its a bit of a double edged sword. It should be much cheaper for the near future for all L2 transactions
