Social media has conditioned people to turn to their tribalistic instincts, pushing people further away and less willing to hold civil discussion with "the other side". It's by far one of the worst modern inventions of our time. We still had a free flow of information via message boards, newsletters, and web 1.0

My edgiest take: The anonymity of online profiles is problematic toward high functioning societal discourse online. It is far too easy for anonymous/nonhuman accounts to outpace functioning human ones. Identity makes us responsible for our actions and words. Its important. And without it, we find ourselves lost.

The electric lightbulb reduced fires but also massively extended working and waking hours for a large part of the population. It's /probably/ a net-positive, but I sometimes wonder if the many advances of civilization don't consistently result in increased wage slavery. (I'm channeling Karsa Orlong over here.)

If we consider money to be a coordination technology, then Iโ€™d suggest that modern economic theory (and its energy and ecology blindness) has been a huge net-negative for society, biodiversity and life.

Social media because the algos and users reward for engagement out of strong emotions. The divide in society is a result of this. Hate speech should not be allowed. Free speech is overrated, there should be limits. I'm european.
