Working on an essay on different progress cycles in tech/products that need people to participate (web3, social media, marketplaces, etc...) in order to work vs. those that don't (AI, biotech, etc...). Has anyone read anything good on this / have any thoughts?

Sidenote: another thing I feel comfortable doing on FC that I don't feel comfortable doing on Twitter, asking for input to an essay before I write it.

I think I understand what you’re getting at as far as AI founders don’t have to build participation, but AI is hugely participatory people just don’t have agency over their data.

People participate in both types of tech it's just that in the first type the participation is direct while the seconds one is indirect, or more specifically, in aggregate.

AI needs people (training data) but just currently doesn’t ask for permission or compensate them :)

I'm sure you've read this several times, but never hurts to revisit the classics https://future.com/the-web3-playbook-using-token-incentives-to-bootstrap-new-networks/

imo @andrewchen nails this in Cold Start Problem with examples of proving the atomic network, solving for the hard side, etc

product cycles that need people to work tend to have more volatile growth curves as people jump ship from one to the other (think hi5 myspace -> facebook). AI and biotech products that succeed have have stronger moats.
