seems that within the tech zeitgeist there is a growing trend of salaried employees who really only pretend to work - doing at most a few hours per week, obfuscated by Zoom, LLMs, outsourcing and naturally covered by layers of bureaucracy in the typically large company they work for. what does this mean for the future? is this just a lagging zero-interest rate phenomenon, or is there something more fundamental?

Preemptive counter-counters: - you can be hardworking and work for a big company. this isn’t an attack on you (or anyone specific) - growing trend != default reality - past bureaucracies were also inefficient, but you had to come spend 8 hours in an office, away from your life every day - hence not the same

Elon cut Twitter's staff by 80% and the site kept running. This showed what most people intuitively knew: at any large tech co, there's a small number of people who do the vast majority of the work that matters. The rest of industry seems to be understanding this and moving in this direction.

This has been around for a decades, no? The new tooling sort of makes it easier to surface and offers new excuses. The more layers of management, the more prominent the issue. It's one of recurring themes in Dilbert and why Facebook, Google and Spotify used to be innovators in working culture. It's the dark-side of flexibility in working nobody really dares to talk about.

Whether it’s new or not, I don’t think it matters so much. Assuming AI will take over all/most of these human jobs, we will need a way to redistribute wealth to those who lose put on their work. If it only takes over a part of jobs, we need to help people find new ones / create industries where humans beat AIs. But workers “stealing” from big tech corporations is not that big of an issue I’d guess

Can confirm views from corporate & (late-stage) startups. I sense 2 waves - continued: side hustles/entertainment taking bigger part of your life - counterwave: stricter controls in work places Some work was prev ineffective > doesn't really matter. Other work should be cut/replaced > more profits? more hustling? Similar things have happened before. Working less doesn't equate to achieving less today in absolute terms. Maybe relatively, we won't progress as fast - but then again, we have so much tech that seems to be breaking out.. Really hard to derive simple takeaways. 200 $degen
