Do you find math notation to be 1 alienating, foreign and unnecessary 2 can make sense of it if needed 3 quickly understandable and unambiguous 4 a beautiful and preferable way to consume math ideas

2, but with a caveat: it takes considerable mental effort for me to make sense of it. So if the notation is part of a larger article and I'm mostly interested in the ideas (which is usually the case), I skip over it and concentrate on the words.

notation -> latex -> llm -> step by step explanation + definitions could be a great way to make math more inviting. personally the notation makes things more consumable and reusable for me, but takes effort to get used to it and also easy to forget/hard to keep track of.

1. The way math in general is taught seems to be designed to be as discouraging as possible.

1. Needlessly abstract. Not the fault of mathematicians, but an insufficient effort to evolve it for new media. http://worrydream.com/#!/KillMath

Kind of a mix — the laboriously terse and taxonomic notations are valuable at succinctly communicating ideas, at a great cost to those unfamiliar.

I find it alienating and foreign, but I’m not so naive to believe it’s unnecessary

1 if it’s without clear context or purpose, 2 or 3 with. Know your audience. Most people (and even a good chunk of people with a quantitative bg) will mentally check out when shown equations. You need to have a good answer for, “Is it absolutely necessary to take the time and space to present this equation?”

i guess it depends on conventions used by different fields/authors but mostly id say (3). Code is mucho more precise and unambiguous IMO "If you can’t program it, you haven’t understood it" - David Deutsch
