evm shower thought: 1 an explosion of L2s are coming 2 block space will be commoditized 3 brand will become the differentiating factor 4 we'll soon see many "L2 for X" narratives 5 some will seed supply by incentivizing developers 6 some will seed demand by incentivizing users 7 fragmentation will make ux much worse

complementary to this, I think we see a bunch more of this: https://eips.ethereum.org/EIPS/eip-7412 not sure if brands differentiate the L2 itself, imho the very best UX will manifest as a brand that piggybacks as many L2s for convenience. 100% on 5/6, wonder how this translates to provers for validiums.

aren't you going to end up with just a few top L2s? they have strong network effects esp for finance, composability and high friction (unless there's magical UX and cross network unlock)

Agree. But I'd argue this is all good for the ecosystem. Tons of experiments in parallel: with custom VMs/costs, custom token/sequencer rewards, etc. We've gotta solve the cross-chain UX problem anyway whether there are 3 L2s or 300.

Why do we need so many new L2s if the ones we already have aren't utilized enough? "L2s are new alt L1s" speculation?

This is why I’m bullish on Optimism. Imo, the Superchain + retro pgf seems like the most credible vision for reconciling good UX with decentralization/security over the longest time horizon.

yep - we gotta: 1. build apps that people want to use 2. make it easy for people to use those apps across many chains work cut out for us

1-6 are already true, 7 is actually easily solved on the ux (look at Warps which are just ETH with premium for Apple fees, gas, bridge and swaps).

i would unpack 3 a bit there are a handful that can become general execution layers with strong network effects. this is the prize that is still somewhat up for grabs. there will be others that will find narrower pmf around certain use cases that will do well in terms of usage (value capture another topic)

Have you looked into Eigen Layer and how do you see that as a comp/alt to scaling up number of L2s? Personally I find the EL option far more intriguing. I can swap tx fees, which is the only real val of owning an L2 that I can see, with liquid staking option and avoid all the effort and maintenance of a chain

Generally agree! The last part is up to us all though :) We need to make protocols work "everywhere" easily, and we also need to make front-ends that are able to abstract away the "bridging" complexity that user should not have to care about imo.

Hard agree! I think another factor that will create many more L2s is that successful apps will become app chains looking for economies of scale... if you subsidize transactions, then tuning the chain to be as cost-efficient as possible becomes critical. I am betting on OP Stack and Superchain to ease the worst of #7.

the UX is probably at an all-time low right now because defragmentation technologies are in development and will scale well as the number of L2s explodes
