It just occurred to me that @vgr's formulation of AI as "a camera, not an engine" finally helps fill in the "unknown knowns" quadrant of Donald Rumsfeld's (in)famous 2x2 in a satisfying way. https://studio.ribbonfarm.com/p/a-camera-not-an-engine

Blogged a quick reaction to this along with another connection that emerged https://www.ribbonfarm.com/2024/01/24/unknown-knowns/

Interesting read and I like the quick dip in India's history (I'm woefully ignorant having received the typical ego-centric American education). I had a different idea of what "unknown knowns" are. Haven't properly put a pen to it but something like the different between "intuition" and consciously knowing something.

That’s closer to how I was thinking of “unknown knowns”. Noospheric dark matter — ideas and knowledge whose presence is implicit in other things we “know”, but where no one’s actually made the connection. Though I think @vgr makes a good case that willful forgetting can also create such dark matter.

Maybe… Cold Noospheric Dark Matter: Unknown Knowns that have never been known knowns. Hot Noospheric Dark Matter: Unknown Knowns that consist of actively erased known knowns. “Hot” because that’s the stuff that’s more likely to burn you…

I have a 3 layer model of what I knows 1. More of everything entailed by a set of examples than humans recognize 2. This Jungian unknown known 3. What you’re calling cold noosphere and I think of as lovecraftian/ballardian aspects of data (especially ancient data) that require specific triggers to awaken

* What AI knows Eg: Chess games you didn’t realize could be played because you’ve rehearsed a narrow class over a short life Chess games that scare you so you unknow know how to play them Chess games you could play if Cthulhu woke up and awakened ancient parts of your brain

🤔 What I’m calling “cold dark matter” seems to encompass both (1) and (3). “Hot dark matter” is obviously (2), but maybe some (3) as well? (To be clear, I just made up that classification, so it’s not exactly well-considered.)

Either way, AI is going to operate on all of them, though categories (1) and (2) are more likely to be surfaced. Feels like there’s some sort of neo-Lovecraftian story in (3). “Inputting the Prompt of Madness” or something like that.
