Am I the only one who feels a bit sad reading takes like "yeah, proxystudio made a big mistake in the past, but they were really good to me / my project / the ecosystem"? Feels like people are literally putting personal gain above the harm done to others.

Really interesting point. But I'm not sure if this kind of public processing helps people get to the truth, or just makes it easier to find and to hide behind group sentiment

I am also saddened by the situation, for its effects on the rest of the Clanker team, and by the reactions along the lines you spelled out.

It is an interesting sort of "transparency", to process our mixed feelings in public, somewhat performatively, and not necessarily for ourselves but to ascertain others' responses so we can calibrate our own.

Yeah, it is understandable that lots of people had a positive interaction and it does not erase this experience. 

I'm also speaking from the perspective of someone who hasn’t experienced anything good or bad from them, and it feels like many people are reducing it to a simple equation: 1 bad thing (to Velodrome) + many good things for Farcaster = net positive.

But usually, people make up for past harm through some form of redemption - not just by getting a second chance to start over.

i mean i do feel really sad about proxy’s past but before i knew anything my interactions with him felt genuine and kind. they helped me shift perspective and move forward in some ways. now that i’m aware of what happened, it doesn’t undo the harm but it also doesn’t erase the human connection i experienced. it’s complicated. humans are complicated.

Retrospectively, it looks like he paid the biggest price - losing his influential reputation and online identity.

But at the time, I imagine the Velo team had it much worse. He wasn’t just another contributor; he was a team leader and a respected thought figure in the ETH community. So even though the funds were returned, the team likely faced a lot of difficulties.

Also, what else could he do once he was traced to the crime and the team knew his legal name? Not sure if running out and hiding was an option with this amount of money

was much harm done tho? he returned the money to velodrome i think. i get that trust was broken but seems like the only person who suffered was him...

You’re probably not. Just understand people are grappling out loud and ultimately that’s not a bad thing. Understanding is important. 

I look back on crimes in the media with regret because I totally got it wrong. How we feel today, we might not feel down the road 

I think all the feelings are fair right now and don’t necessarily reflect what the final consensus will be
