What attracted me to Farcaster? I first heard about it from @colin on @sinahab's show. Paragraph was what originally interested me, as their answers to the problems I had with substack were compelling. I then listened to @v talk about Farcaster on the same show (I don't remember much from that talk, it probably went over my head lol). I kept digging. The previous summer I had messed with Mastodon & Fediverse hosting. I thought it was a novel solution, but the result was so many chaotic splinters & fractures it didn't seem like a viable long-term solution. That, and the hosting and maintenance felt very web 2.0. "Sufficiently decentralized" was a concept I could wrap my head around. It was the greatest selling point for me as a non-crypto person, and it was a use for blockchain tech outside of just money-chasing. Plus it reminded me a lot of what I'm trying to do in the creative space: Create open Intellectual Property to share with others. Trustworthy, robust, and financed distribution is needed for this!

The problem I have with the NFT model is it doesn't feel like it leans into the strengths of the *text*. It feels more like an obligation to create a visually artistic header to make your article worthwhile. The AI generated ones help with this I guess, but it still doesn't emphasize the written word. I'm not sure coins will fix this problem either. I think it would be cool if people could pay to highlight/underline certain sections of text, or "own" parts of the article itself. While reading someone could hover over the section and see who bought that part of the article. The article then becomes tied with the purchaser, the author profits, and it serves to promote an excerpt the purchaser found most valuable. This also keeps the writing free and open for everyone without additional paywalls.

I'm on Chapter 8 of my innumerable revisions. The good news is I still quite love the story. It's actually been 4 years since I drafted an outline of Act I, it's almost been 4 year since I started writing. It's been over 10 years since I first started conceptualizing the story. Keep at it.

At present, long-form reading is reserved for something you care so much about you will do it to the exclusion of other things. Podcasts are for things you only care enough to pair with another activity. Never in my life have I seen or heard of someone who sat down to exclusively listen/watch a podcast.
