@naval "Marxism, besides denying human incentives, also has a problem where it just assumes that everything is finite and we're all just dividing up the same small set of things. Well, the cavemen didn't have color TVs, computers, cars, antibiotics, or medicine. They were not sitting around dividing up the same few things. The knowledge grows, and we create more. It also tends to assume that we can freeze frame at some point in society and say, 'Well, we have enough different kinds of sneakers, enough different kinds of housing, we just need to allocate it better.' And that is not how anything works." … https://x.com/arjunkhemani/status/1869684074094416007

Naval on federalism and city states. “I think one common factor you see in the Enlightenment, the free-thinking eras that we know about, is a high degree of federalism. And that means like lots of small city states next to each other. So for example, ancient Greece, you had a lot of little city states. In the era of the Enlightenment, you had a lot of little city states and small municipalities in Europe. And there was also the age of exploration was going on. So people were very free to like go to different places.

Interesting post by @balajis.eth about tribalization in the 21st century. What I find really interesting is the map of Germany before Bismarck's unification of Germany. The interesting thing is that many people in Germany still identify more with their regional affiliation than with their national German identity. For example, a Swabian finds it more important to be a Swabian than a German. The same applies to Bavarians or Saxons. https://x.com/balajis/status/1869997639175139452

"Helvetica in use" 02 Knoll: Another brand that is famous for using Helvetica as its main typeface is Knoll. Knoll is an American design furniture manufacturer known for its Bauhaus design furniture. Knoll's visual identity was created by New York design legend Massimo Vignelli (1967). Massimo Vignelli is better known than any other designer for his preference for Helvetica in his designs. For more information about Knoll and Massimo Vignelli, I add some links below.

@Naval on degrowth (1/2) “Nobody actually engages in degrowth in their actual everyday life. Nobody lowers their standard of living. Nobody wants to be less fit. Nobody wants to be less healthy. Nobody wants to be less knowledgeable. Nobody wants less of anything. So, the idea that society as a whole is going to go through degrowth is just, it's just suicide of a sort. Now, these bad ideas, they basically get tax on the good ideas. But any society that degrowth itself will simply get outcompeted by the societies that don't degrowth themselves.

I am still fascinated by the Zeppelin as a flying object. It must have been an impressive sight back then, wherever it appeared. People were not used to seeing flying objects, if only very small airplanes. It was also the first time that it was possible to fly across the Atlantic with all the comforts of the time. https://youtu.be/LV__lltmsys?feature=shared

Helvetica is one of the most influential typefaces in the graphic design industry, which is why it might be interesting to do a series entitled "Helvetica in use". 01 Lufthansa: One of the first companies to use Helvetica in its branding was Deutsche Lufthansa. Otl Aicher redesigned Lufthansa's visual identity (1962) and used Helvetica as the only font for the logo and all other areas of use. Helvetica was used for over 50 years and was replaced by its own font in 2018. /helvetica

Blue Banana is actually a term for the concept of a European megalopolis. From Liverpool to Milan. The concept of the "blue banana" was developed by a group of French geographers.

Here’s my Farcaster Wrapped ‘24! As my first year on Farcaster draws to a close, I'd like to take the time to thank you all here. Thanks for interesting posts, thanks for good comments and answers and of course for the likes ;-). Thank you also for putting up with my strange posts. I would especially like to thank @july who very often pushed my posts when I still had a really small reach (> 100). I don't think I would got this far today without his help and trust. I hope this doesn't sound too pathetic. Top engaged fam : @july , @alplanet , @naomiii , @thebluffer.eth , @pjc Frame built by @vidhatha
