When they have an answer for everything. When they name drop excessively. When they are hiring to “pump out features”. When they focus on how rich they are going to make you.

Sometime last year I asked a C level exec at a major nft marketplace, What their plan was to ensure they make it through the bear and his response was simply …” to survive ”…I’m sorry but I don’t think that’s a plan 🚩

A) They know less than me on all this... I'm here to learn from the best not work for someone in which I'm the best. B) They are at the peak of mount stupid (dunning Krueger effect). This usually coincides with point "A".

Reiterating a few of mine that have t been mentioned yet - young and never worked another job - hasn’t worked in the vertical they’re working in now - was a co/founder of something else within the last 2 years that’s debatably related - has anyone on their team doing “strategy” pre product - has a product person pre PMF - has a newsletter - etc

Founders with low emotional intelligence. I’ll invest in them, but I won’t work for them. That’s asking for misery.

The founder calling themselves a serial entrepreneur but when you check it out you find they haven’t created a single successful product +++++ to the founder not being able to give a one-liner for what they are building

Cost center vs thought partnership mentality. Tone from the top on how they value their employees also shows their hiring practices and if they dig enough to find real ownership mentality.

Oh so many to list. I’ve been in startups for most of my career. From Research Scientist to Director to Chief AI Officer. Biggest red flag early on is when you have a solution in search of a problem, or founder syndrome.

Some red flags to look out for in a founder or founding team include lack of clear vision, poor communication skills, resistance to feedback, inability to adapt to changes, and a history of failed ventures.
