I'm building out the MVP

I know from past experience, making it pretty will take 10X the time of making it work well

I'm inclined to not get bogged down in pretty, and focus instead on getting it in users hands and building distribution

When users start to complain about design!

Ask your users and look and your competitors (or atleast products in your vertical). 

Do customers respond to better UI/UX?

Also UX prolly more important than purely aesthetic design
