I have a suspicion that the introduction of the iPhone has led to a gradual mass-imbecilization of society

Been seeing this as a university instructor over the past decade — massive decline in critical thinking/problem solving. They don’t know how — all answers are in their pocket. And they don’t care to learn how. It’s frightening.

Hmm could be! But operating in parallel with this curve is the introduction of social media. In particular, facebook. So I could see it being related to the iPhone (via app store --> fb added to your pocket), but it may be more of a result of the software than the hardware, since people also use computers for social media a ton, especially back in the late 2000s

I find myself making dum-dum spelling/grammatical errors more often lately, especially when typing fast. It really bothers me when I catch one. I blame my phone.

Like pretty much every graph I see, I want to see this zoomed out with way more years of data.

Agree – Iphone & Social media contribute to faster decline, BUT there were already declines trending back to 70's in SMRNL, problem solving, critical thought. I did a study for an IPTV network we were building in 2005 and covered SMRNL. our research showed declines were correlated to media programming, standardized testing, loss of "family values", parental structures around "play", and rise in dual-income all contributed to the decline of SMRNL. Top of head... • by mid 80s avg HH watch time for tv was 6 hours (reduced critical thinking 10%) • 81'-92' MTV and the switch from edu to entertainment • 92' report found that children 2-17 watched 24 hours tv weekly (correlated to declines in SRMNL) • 94' kids playing video games over 5 hours weekly, scored lower on MRS • By 96', most media programming was action and not narrative (reduced cognitive activities and a 10-15% drop in vocab) • 04' report on "unstructured play" (25% decrease in creativity and problem solving)

It turns out connecting the entire globe to your nervous system maybe wasn't the best idea.

Yep. This is already well documented. That's why some European countries started prohibiting smartphones in their schools.

undoubtedly. it’s hard to impress upon someone the joy of learning and discovery through reasoning when they haven’t had to overcome that initial tension of how to learn in the first place.

Too easy of a conclusion. Much more going on than just smartphones.

I hear you, and it’s an interesting thought, iPhones might’ve shifted how we think and interact. Maybe it’s less about imbecilization and more about distraction or dependency creeping in.

Feels like a correlation, rather than a causation. Yes, iPhones made socials too accessible though.

I read something about this in a study in France sometime ago where they thought the bigger problem was that no outliers on the upper end of the bell curve were being produced more then the center of the curve moving farther to the left
