This is a very impressive JD Vance speech at the a16z conference. Agree or not the vision of bringing manufacturing back to America will appeal to many people. No more fake jobs: https://x.com/aphysicist/status/1902002518869123314?s=46

The Dems aren't taking him seriously. His populist economic platform will resonate. They need a version of Bernie for 2028 (that the party doesn't torpedo in backrooms). Economic populism is the winning move for the next couple cycles.

It's sad to me that we see manufacturing jobs, (routine, manual, and often unrewarding labor) as 'real' jobs. We need a better counternarrative that points out how our increasingly specialized labor force doing 'fake jobs' generates far more value for the world than manufacturing jobs ever will.

He's impressive and a good speaker, but I still think the Zelenskyy debacle showed some weakness in the way he specifically handled it

I was deeply involved in the Made in USA movement starting around 2008, 7 years after China gained acceptance into the WTO. At that time, the influx of imported goods was devastating local manufacturing, but consumers were increasingly focused on paying less & less for consumer goods. Cheap labor only works because Walmart accustomed consumer to low prices. I completely understand the desire to revive American manufacturing, but the reality is that our society has become so far removed from producing certain CPGs that implementing this vision would be incredibly challenging. Achieving a meaningful impact would require significant hardship (price increase, for people on minimum wage). the majority of people paying for every day goods. The only viable way to bring back some manufacturing & remain competitive would be through robotics & automation. However, this approach would primarily benefit a small percentage of people rather than the broader population. My 2 cents What’s w fake job?

Always confounding how the US thinks it can bring back manufacturing jobs all the while China has been issuing public economic 10 year plans on how they are trying to move into the most valuable sector of the us economy — service and software — and offshore manufacturing to SEA

Bringing manufacturing back in a short period of time is impossible. Build new things is totally possible.

If only Americans wanted to work in manufacturing jobs. We don’t have the labour force to compete with the likes of China and India.
