There was a certain generation of old American writers who had such incredible spirits and talent. I'm thinking of Washington Irving, H.L. Mencken, W.E.B. Dubois, Mark Twain and those of their ilk. The level of erudition and refinement of civilization evident in their words represented the peak of American culture – a rich, old culture despite the relative youth of the nation at that time. I highly recommend people to pick up the works of these older writers. You will find that they are not just fresh despite their age, they are unlike anything one can find printed today.

I fully attribute this to the heavy drinking and smoking culture of the time.
