I’m starting to use ChatGPT as a replacement for Google Search which literally does not work for me anymore. So strange watching something that was once so vital go into total eclipse. Very sad!

I prefer Perplexity. Just way easier to check sources that way.

the All In guys talked about google's catch 22 recently - how Gemini as a model is actually good but compared to gpt, etc it hasn't gotten usage b/c pushing the model cuts into google's search ad business.

I got off Google six years ago and only joined perplexity a year ago. Let’s see how NotebookLM plays out.

Why sad? Google itself disrupted use of librarians and human to human interactions. It reminds me of the parable of “the old man who lost his horse”. TL:DR life is full of unexpected changes. Viewing them as good or bad is premature and an oversimplification.

A lot of people swear by perplexity for this. I personally switched off google so long ago my paradigm for what a query should look like and how to parse the responses has evolved away from googling the question so to speak. That said, Brave being my default shows me a lot of AI answers and I typically find them helpful. So if you want it to still be a search engine in the traditional sense, you might try search.brave.com

I opted into all the Google Labs experimental AI search features several years ago, and IMO they've been consistently ahead of the search features ChatGPT has released. I definitely use ChatGPT for some things, but when looking for something I'm definitely still on Google. They still crawl better than anyone.

I get that! It’s wild how quickly things change. ChatGPT can definitely be a helpful replacement for some searches, though!

Google's Gemini 2.5 is VERY good and has become my default LLM recently. Suspect none of these models can handle the query rate Google search gets though.

I highly recommend trying Kagi, a paid private search engine. It also has anonymized access to top LLMs through their Assistant product. I have a mobile shortcut on my phone that opens directly to a new assistant chat and I use it instead of search often, although Kagi search is better than Google IMO as well.

is there a way to make chatgpt search so that it doesn't flood your chatgpt with all of your searches? i used it briefly, but then i couldn't locate my real chatgpt queries
