I’ve noticed that outside of the West, liberalism at most has a cult following or people are actively hostile to it. People are very tribalistic and view the world in those terms, or at absolute best they have some kind of universalizing religious belief. When I say the West too it’s even narrower than that because it’s just Western Europe and America. Even in places like the Balkans (which I love) liberalism feels pretty embattled and like a foreign implant.

I feel like the US is the worst in terms of polarizations around liberalism: for liberals, if you're not an absolute libertarian you're a communist, and for leftists, liberals are fascists 🤷‍♂️

"liberal" is a slur in India so this checks out. 'Oh you must be one of those human rights types.' Ok man.

Liberalism is embattled in LATAM. Right on the US's doorstep.

This is because liberalism is ultimately foreign to human nature and cannot exist without absurd amounts of social conditioning. The west still has the infrastructure for this for now.

I think America did a pretty good job of mixing progressive thinking with tribalism. Capitalism and self rule have been great binding ideals for 2.5 centuries. Liberalism is a threat to belief driven tribalism. Progressive thinking tends to free people to question their condition. I am not surprised by the hostility.

How do you define liberalism? It's kind of an overloaded term in the US to the point where it's kind of meaningless to discuss directly. It makes sense to discuss the efficacy of various social programs, or maybe various political doctrines or specific funding mechanisms, but "liberal" is mostly just a slur used by people all over the political spectrum.
