I’ve noticed that outside of the West, liberalism at most has a cult following or people are actively hostile to it. People are very tribalistic and view the world in those terms, or at absolute best they have some kind of universalizing religious belief. When I say the West too it’s even narrower than that because it’s just Western Europe and America. Even in places like the Balkans (which I love) liberalism feels pretty embattled and like a foreign implant.

How do you define liberalism? It's kind of an overloaded term in the US to the point where it's kind of meaningless to discuss directly. It makes sense to discuss the efficacy of various social programs, or maybe various political doctrines or specific funding mechanisms, but "liberal" is mostly just a slur used by people all over the political spectrum.
