if I opened up hifi components (amps, preamps, DACs, etc.), photographed the internals, and explained their circuits, would any of you nerds be interested?

haha that’s an amazing prompt but very hard to answer. I could write a very long piece about that. 

tldr; there are legitimately expensive components in hi-fi gear and R&D is very expensive, but the point of diminishing returns for you as a listener is difficult to define by anyone other than you.

that said, there are some brands that offer better value than others. the tough part is being able to hear and compare many different components in controlled tests to even begin to form such conclusions.

What I'd love to learn about is where the high cost, and high cost *variance* of these devices come from. Is it all brand? Are there real differences in quality between the parts? How do I ensure that every marginal unit of currency I spend on hifi stuff goes to something meaningful and not snake oil?
