A year ago, my dad lost his job and we found out he has vascular dementia. This week, we are looking for memory care centers for him to move into. This shit moved so fast. It’s actually frightening. From working in 2024 to completely unable to care for himself a year later.

It’s scary man. He was an engineer. He used his brain every day at work. I have always thought being a really active thinker and using your brain was preventative for dementia, but it seems not. It’s mostly been my mom caring for him with me and my brothers helping when we can. But it’s too much now. He needs round the clock supervision.

Too young to be shifting into a caretaking role for your folks.

Blessed he has you and your mom looking out for him.

Thanks man. We are. It’s the hardest on my mom cause she’s caring for him full time and we lost 2 of my brothers in the last year. Just one thing after another.

Yeah it’s scary man. It’s really opened my eyes to the idea of allowing people to go out on their own terms. It is legal in a few states now but under very stringent regs that prevent people with dementia from doing so. (Probably rightly so, but I wish there was some kind of procedure in place to put in your will that it you’re not capable of xyz cognitive test, then I’d like to end it)

It’s cruelest twist of fate when a loved one is already gone mentally but is still present physically, because it won’t allow you to grieve properly and get closure. My thoughts are with you 💕

Tbh, I think we are all ready for him to go. Hes not here anymore. It’s just a physical body now. I think I have definitely started grieving already.

I’ve dealt with dementia.. it’s very hard seeing your hero go from superman to forgetting who you are and even who they are. 

Sad to say but when I dealt with I felt as if the person died twice.. I pray your situation gets better man

Oh man…. You can’t catch a break. As someone who remembers my parents caring for a grandparent in this circumstance my heart goes out to you.
