Credit card points are a consumer bribe that preserves the credit card system’s hold over payments. USDC is 10x better for hyperinflation protection and cross border payments. It’s not 10x yet better for retail payments. I wonder if it can be, and - if not - if we should focus efforts elsewhere.

How does the hyperinflation protection part work? For USD or for other currencies?

I like the new initiative by Base to onboard merchants with usdc. It gave me early square vibes and I think it’s a better product if it’s operated on base with lower fees and fast confirmations. It’s just a matter of a sustained advertising campaign and I think that’s exactly what Base is now doing. If square can do it, so can usdc.

You earn 5.2% on Coinbase for having USDC. Somehow that needs to be integrated into the smart wallet and communicated effectively.

credit card points are a very american centric thing. in europe, many just use debit cards, the points game isn't very relevant. china? its all QR codes in e-wallets, again sans points. usdc payments are like cash/direct debit, just on crypto rails, no credit, per se (and of course, no rewards, per se)

What is the advantage gained by the creditor for "the credit card system having holds over payments"? Holds over the individuals ability to pay?

Payments is a massive category though. Instead of targeting the entire system you go after a specific group. For instance there are a massive number of CC defaults happening right now. Maybe this becomes a low cost alternative for pay as you go debit cards.

usdc does offer significant advantages in certain areas, but you're right, there's still a gap in its utility for everyday retail payments. should we be pushing for improvements in usdc's retail adoption, or would it be more impactful to innovate in areas where it already excels? what do you think?
