Do you know how much $$$ you need to never work again? I started tracking my expenses at the end of 2021, so finally I have 3-year statistics. This is how much I've spent each year, not including travel: - 2022 - $8400 - 2023 - $6612 - 2024 - $5876 My lifestyle has gotten more conscious and sustainable throughout the years, explaining the downward trend that contradicts inflation. Travel cost me either $900 or $2500 a year - depending on the number and intensity of trips. So basically if I had $10k a year I would feel very comfortable, with a bit to spare πŸ’œ To get that much in passive income I would need to invest from $100k (10% APY) to $200k (5% APY). Which is what some people earn from a couple of shitcoin trades πŸ˜† And if I want to have kids someday, that amount would probably have to be doubled. My wish for this year is to start receiving that passive income, hopefully I'll be able to amass enough capital πŸ™ How big is that number for you? Or maybe you already live on passive income?

I loved your analysis, Anna! I would like to know where you are from to have more context. Without a doubt, when you have a baby, everything changes and expenses are no exception. Here in Argentina, it is crazy that living costs more than in Europe. But the most crazy thing is that our salaries are perhaps 10 or 20 times less than those there. It is a pretty terrible situation. Thank you very much for sharing this genius with us!!

My number is much higher than this! We’re a family of four living in a high cost-of-living area, so we start at 10x your bottom number πŸ˜… That being said, we consume much less than our peers, so we’re not in terrible shape. No car, no mortgage, no debt. Consuming more is a bad habit that is easy to pick up - the more you consume the more you want to consume. Breaking that habit is difficult but doable for everyone.

Never counted, I'm afraid of this figures. And interesting fact, that life becomes more expensive from year to year, but you spend less

Anna, that's great! I do wish you success in achieving your goal this year! As for me, I’d also love to reach a passive income that fully covers my expenses. But not too long ago, I realized that this idea frustrates me more than motivates me. The main reason is renting an apartment, which has become my biggest expense and is highly sensitive to inflation. So it seems like I’d be better off shifting my focus to something more achievable That’s also why I’ve slightly changed my approach. Even though I’ve always tried to save money regardless of my income, I’ve decided to spend more on travel and experiences. I don’t want to postpone life entirely, especially if my journey toward passive income takes longer than expected The same goes for having a child. I used to firmly believe that I needed to own place to live first, but now I’m not so rigid about it :))

It was really interesting to read! @klusya How do you manage to spend less when life around you is getting more expensive?! You know, I've never counted how much I spend... I'll try it this year!

I will pay you 1% of your expenses in 2024 ($58.76) to share a detailed breakdown of your expenses, ideally with the various items or categories sorted most to least and descriptions for any trick or hacks to avoid larger expenses most people incur. Would love to read/review.

These are pretty similar numbers to mine but temporarily I'm spending some money on teeth, skin, health now to not spend more in the future

10% APY implies a pretty high level of risk to take on vs trad fi interest rates . Never underestimate risk if you need to preserve your capital. I think a lot of expenses in last couple of years have multiplied because of super high interest rates on mortgages and gas/elec/oil utility bills have soared. Don’t know how you have escaped that! But yeh in general one can live sustainably and frugally on a lot of things.

Wait what!!! wow. This is super interesting. Tracked mine after seeing your post and I was shocked (didn't expect it to be that much) but I didn't even travel so 'retirement income' is probably a bit higher but not as much as I imagined

Cost of living will depend on where you reside. Requirements are considerably greater here. Car, holidays, afterschool clubs…on top of all of the standard overheads. Would barely survive a quarter on that budget.
