Not forcing things is not a skill to be learned once but practice to continue to do over and over again

I think I needed to hear this. Lately, I haven’t been “forcing” my work - and to me, that feels wrong. It feels like I’m not working hard enough. 1000 $degen

Forcing things can also come from need of control which may indicate high level of uncertainty. This may look like an impatience from outside; while internally it is a struggle to escape discomfort

One big exception that always amuses me is home repair. Blows my mind how often the answer is to force/jam/pound/cajole something into place. Hammers and shims are literally made for this.

I read an essay about "nonviolent self-motivation" years ago (basic idea: don't force yourself to do things). I still think about that concept often. Self-coercion can take really subtle forms sometimes, but it's still coercion. Also, it's really hard to live non-coercively in a culture that normalizes coercion!

The beauty of this skill is that the more you practice non-attachment, the more effortlessly things often flow your way

Agreed. Forcing is not the way. We must receive and communicate truths sparingly.

It’s all a practice in letting go of control - imagine if you planted a 🌱 then pulled at it and prodded it and got frustrated it isn’t growing faster or to your schedule
