One thing I notice in the West especially is this tendency to severely underestimate how much change China has gone through in the past 30ish years. It’s unprecedented at a scale that I don’t portend to even attempt to understand as well, but I think it’s severely overlooked as many in the West

I think Zhangke Jia captures the tremendous modernization and change (and the effect it has on humans) through movies especially the change that China has undergone in the past 30 years. “ash is purest white" is a wonderful illustration of the changes https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7298400/

I know @balajis.eth & others have been yelling this for a while, too. I've not kept up with it well, but they seem to have some challenges that might slow net progress despite the impressive work they've done.

Definitely overlooked. China has essentially been remade overnight within one generation (~30 years) Feels like the education in STEM in China has been outpacing US but we haven't really seen the effects of this yet

Apache NuttX RTOS this week reported 51% of the commits done by Xiaomi. And many presenters from there at the annual event. Literally everywhere, doing great work. And that’s just one company. A company that many see as an Apple wannabe. Which is likely one on many aspects, but not on OSS, and many of their devices look pretty nice (never had one, but attractive UIs).

I lived in China for 7 years. The speed of change is incredible. Everyone has an entrepreneurial spirit and is willing to embrace change and try new things.
