Killer article, learned a ton. One comment: My experience with some pretty intense private group chats in Farcaster (Club Ted, Bracket OGs) also suggest to me that we don't necessarily need to identify "private" with "real-life" networks. There are relationships being formed in entirely online spaces that are so strong that they feel like they should also be considered as part of the market who need these sorts of improvements to private group chats that you're envisioning.

isn't the bet here on the open ecosystem fostering innovation in a free open market that finally leads to that 10x messaging app?

Agree with the 3 points and on how valuable building on an open protocol is - it’s why we’re building @onit on @xmtp

damn good my man it makes me think about as farcaster dcs can be embedded into any application, taking the private group chat w u makes a lot of sense messages will flow across applications 100 $degen

Great insights. I think social networks are going to change dramatically thanks to decentralisation.

in your view, is this new messaging paradigm a protocol or an app? it seems like there are some inherent contradictions with building an open protocol and having a large enough moat to invest the resources to build a groupme killer. at some point you need to lock in the user to achieve that scale. this is compounded by the fact that normies can’t be expected to download a new messaging app if protocol/app dev starts acting contrary to the spirit of an open but private protocol. bit different from a public network like farcaster idk, lots of questions
