I’m thinking "Story of Your Life" by Ted Chiang. Short, human, borderline poetic. Touches on aliens, society, and time so they can figure out what appeals most. Movie "Arrival" was a solid adaptation of it.

I thought daemon was incredible more anticipation than hard scifi though. I also want to read Alain damasio , a Contemporary french sci fi writer. I've heard a lot of nice things.
