actually wild to me that quebec is allowed to prohibit all public services from being rendered in english even though both english and french are the official languages of the COUNTRY we live in 🫠 🥲

this is history repeating itself from the 80s no? that last sweep of language laws and secession attempt drove a ton of small and large businesses out of Quebec

Was recently informed that the language on my corp tax profile has been changed to French and cannot be changed back because of a law mandating French only service to local businesses. They will eventually drive me out of my home with monolingual policies like this.

the whole secession and "je me souviens" thing is so twisted though

like yeah okay we get it, you remember that you were persecuted by english settlers and colonizers and you want to protect your french culture and you're never going to forget this and will continue to hold a grudge forever

but it's a HUGE no-no to take it further and say "but y'all were colonizers yourselves in the first place and pushed out the indigenous population and did far worse to them than the english did to you"

also like, the french language is not at risk of dying lmao

yeah, the second legault/CAQ realized they don't need to win the montreal/anglo population to win a majority, they got REAL intense with all the french language laws

one of the main things protecting quebec is the production of hydro power, if they didn't have that i have a feeling the federal government would be more involved...or maybe not. it's a mess

there is very little (if any) Anglo representation in QC politics, municipal or provincial, so the idea that French citizens or culture is threatened here is so beyond twisted.

monolingual policies like this will just make more people leave and the only reason QC is able to persist as-is is because of equalization payments from provinces like AB, so this agenda doesn’t seem sustainable long-term to me

i'm fully conversational in french! 

but when i need to speak to a doctor about test results, or work through problems accessing my tax portal or documents over the phone, it's way easier for me to do this in my native tongue (english)

Have you learned French unintentionally at all? I've always wondered if I would just sorta absorb it by immersion
