How do you decide which chain to build on? Base is definitely the "go-to" nowadays, but why? It's not TVL because Arbitrum has a lot more and Base was the preferred long before it got to #2 in TVL. Users? Maybe but I don't see many solid stats backing that. From my POV, it feels like its just vibes? But why? Doesn't it make more sense to do a thoughtful analysis of which chain is ideal for an app's needs?

potentially a hot take, but I think it’s the Base team’s focus on acquiring builder mindshare minimizing sidequests and focusing on the core task at hand

Blunt answer: it's volume + narrative. Arb do a huge amount of bluechip traffic, not so much on the memecoin/super-speculative side as Base does. Farcaster plays a gigantic role in this, especially with degen & fc native mints being a huge source of activity. Lastly, Base's growth MoM far outpaces that of Arb.

Choosing a chain on vibes is probably not the best move but builders can get tired of weighing up all the options. I generally look at community (users, events), builder support (technical and/or financial), partnerships (key partners have tapped into e.g. OP, Circle), and strategy alignment (a focus on consumer vs DeFi)

Base helps the most, or appears to help the most, with distribution

IMO distribution. How well a chain operates doesn't matter at all unless it has users, and Coinbase has done a phenomenal job pushing Base and rewarding builders on it. Not to mention it integrates so well with things like CB wallet and has low fees and decent speeds.

personally it's the idea that coinbase will make it easier for normies to onboard straight from fiat to base, and that will drive usage in the future

we’re prioritizing base bc they’ve prioritized builders, bc they’ve leaned into fc and we’re tapping the fc social graph, and bc we believe they’ll have incentive to drive their exchange users to base first and foremost

it's definitely NOT about the tech then it's about the mindshare so far, base seems to be consistently retaining the mindshare simply by being less cringe 1000$farther

I think everyone who is mentioning about Base providing the most distribution is also kinda wrong because TON has even more distribution...

Can approach it from a user growth perspective: For new apps, I think it comes down to 'meet where your users are' here, so it depends on the personas you are targetting IMO and matching that with the onchain data available for your GTM strategy. If you are a bigger protocol/dAPP 'users meet you where you are' might apply. Currently: Arbitrum hosts a lot of DeFi TVL/Volume for example that Base hasn't captured yet. Base more for consumer DeFi/SocialFi. DefiLama provides quite some insights here. Can approach it from a technical/dev community perspective: What is the *nature* of the dApp; does it suit a certain stack better (L1 vs L2 vs L3 etc)? How is the dev support and mindshare on the chain etc? Are there grants? I think the best dApps have their chain strategy/execution thought out and adapt swiftly within that strategy if needed - the ones that go for the 'vibes' are the one's surfing the narrative, long term not a good sign you want to see from a team from investment perspective. Play long term games.

Base feels like the chain taking the end customer most seriously and prioritizing hard working teams that are genuinely trying to create cool stuff.
