my take is Apple catches up on hardware, they just do it so well meta is fighting an uphill battle against their own brand & reputation

At this point, it doesn’t even feel like a decision—with Apple cutting off their dick’s on the Apple ecosystem, Facebook knows they have to make their own hardware platform in order to exploit the users for their data at any scale resembling what they once were.

I'm long both. I have a bigger stake in AAPL b/c I can't live without my Apple devices and Facebook makes it too hard to export my data so I wouldn't mind it if they went under. But of course I'm long b/c of the founder and also b/c the Oculus is incredible, even if it makes me dizzy.

Seems to be the unpopular take, but I go with Zuck. Apple might have the hardware advantage, but Zuck is the founder and can literally reinvent Meta into the company he NEEDS it to be. Apple might release a great piece of hardware with an uninspiring vision but their marketing. Zuck will take the big bets.

Meta would be competing against Apple's hardware, OS, logistics, dev relations and brand advantages. Meta could win if Apple falls for the innovator's dilemma and ignores the space for too long. If they have already been investing in it and don't treat it like Apple TV, Meta will have a very tough time.

Stratechary has had *excellent* content on Meta / VR recently i.e. https://stratechery.com/2022/meta-meets-microsoft/ leaves me believing that Meta may simply be too early and playing in the wrong (expensive, too novel today) part of the stack. though kudos to them for the conviction.

Betting on apple. They control the platform. I know Zuck is trying to do the same for AR/VR but i suspect apple has too big of an advantage to tap into this thru iOS vs Zuck inspiring billons of ppl to buy his h/w

Apple will dominate and it won’t even be close. Meta hasn’t had a social platform innovation since newsfeed; they grew purely through acquisition and ruthlessly copying competitors. Creating an integrated hardware and software platform from scratch just isn’t in Mark’s wheelhouse

my take is Apple wins. I always defend founder-led companies but competing with the best hardware + dev ecosystem is not possible. Same happens with ethereum vs other chains (diff context but same idea)
