For some reason, this doesn't sound inviting to me. I prefer to purchase artist merchandise directly from the artists rather than through Spotify. Would love to hear more thoughts... https://techcrunch.com/2023/10/16/spotify-launching-personalized-in-app-merch-hub/

Overall, I think I like this, especially since they are working with Shopify to do it. That means the artists own the relationship with their fans. That's important, essential even. I'll be interested to hear about the successes, especially for smaller artists.

I want to support people not platforms so if they do it right I’m down but considering the realities I doubt they will impress fans or creators in a meaningful way that warrants migrating from other tools. Spotify and other incumbents are antisocial in a lot of frustrating ways

For some regions, it's always easier to acquire merch from vendors with a pro shipping network. I prefer the likes of Boomkat—or anything similar when it comes to merch—Bandcamp etc. stores of artists but 99% of them get lost in shipping. That's why you can find the most niché merch on Amazon Türkiye, for ex.

I agree it's less inviting than P2P. It may not matter though. The scale of existing listener-base on Spotify, combined with targeted ads are likely to drive more in-app sales for artists than other merch distribution channels such as website or social w/o the embedded music.
