Overall, I think I like this, especially since they are working with Shopify to do it. That means the artists own the relationship with their fans. That's important, essential even. I'll be interested to hear about the successes, especially for smaller artists.

That said, it feels like table stakes. Will be interesting to see what Spotify does to help artists, who they help and what they do to help. Engaging with fans where they are engaged with music has not historically worked well, but hats off to Spotify for checking the box.

I’m assuming that Shopify and Spotify have some sort of deal because I don’t see any information about how Spotify makes money from this. In that case it’s not a bad idea, although this would be artists giving up even more of their data to Spotify.
