Have we hit peak booze? Alcohol consumption declining but is it permanent? Consumption of beer peaked in 2016. Wine has been falling since 1979. Interestingly, we have been spending more on alcohol while consuming less of it, opting for expensive cocktails and higher end booze. https://archive.is/20250506113318/https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2025-04-20/peak-booze-alcohol-consumption-may-be-in-terminal-decline#selection-3251.0-3251.69

anecdotally, more and more of my friends are no longer drinking - and when/if they do, it’s like once a year the rate that’s increasing seems to match the trend

I hope it has; this notorious chart by /psychedelics OG Prof. Dr. Nutt says it all. My wife @ruthveda.eth and I have been sober for 5 years and never missed it a sec. So far my teenager is (gladly) not interested in the left side of this chart...;-)

clearly better for health, but almost certainly worse for birth rates, which has several kinds of negative externalities on health

Expensive cocktails are just the new wine tasting… curated, aesthetic, and less about getting drunk. The ritual remains, the buzz fades
