I was a teenager in the late 80s. Music was not abundant. You had to have access to a disc or a cassette with the song you wanted to hear. Sharing music involved friction and was intentional. "You you have this disc"? "Can you lend it to me"? "Check out what I discovered the other day at the music store". Creating a "mixtape", a cassette with a custom playlist, required time -a lot of time. A carefully created mixtape, would often be the equivalent of a love letter. Maybe this is my capitalist brain kicking into overdrive, but the complaint about upsells on the McDonald’s kiosk is silly. The people who built that care. They care about their company doing well, which means selling products. Upsells work.
