I didn't know about this feature but apparently one thing people love about Bluesky is that it makes it easy to block lists of users en masse. Shadowban as a service.

Not really shadowbanning. It’s just blocking but made easy. Shadowbanning is algorithmic de-emphasization or post hiding in the algorithm itself. This is opt-in, per user, feed curation.

Not really. It’s more like echo chamber as a user-selectable option. Twitter is echo chamber as a service.

Arguably Twitter is an echo chamber as a product and Bluesky is an echo chamber as a service. Both are echo chambers just the latter gives you more controls to build your own echo chamber.

Yes that’s a fair distinction, at least as it applies to twitter/threads. But I’m not sure I would call Bluesky an echo chamber as a service. It’s more like a very open and modular system and it’s the culture that is using to create echo chambers. There’s nothing about the design that does this inherently. You’re not paying anyone to create these lists so it’s not a service and choosing to use the list doesn’t even inherently create an echo chamber. Like if the people you block aren’t engaging in good faith discussion (like nazis or edgelords) how is letting them into your feed helping to prevent a bubble? In a way you’re just avoiding them creating a bubble with you in it. Also if people want to use social to create a cozy web for themselves that’s cool too. Open systems that give flexibility rock! And what’s great about blueskies design is you don’t have to use it that way. People being forced to see your content because you want them to, is not freedom.
