The 7 day challenge period for moving value off strikes me as short-sighted and IMO ultimately self-defeating because it limits interoperability with non-OP chains, which will be necessary for mid to long term success.

I get the reasoning: security + disincentivizing taking value out of the ecosystem. But I (maybe naively) think that any system which erects false barriers is opening the door for more efficient competitors to steal a march on them

It’s not a false barrier, though. The post you linked explains why it’s necessary and why it’s 7 days. The OP stack will likely move to zk proofs later on and the waiting period will go away. I haven’t seen anything to suggest the waiting period is to keep liquidity on the network.
