Five years from now, what will be seen as a more impactful launch this year: GPT 4 or Apple headset?

GPT4 is more impactful but consumers will think Apple Headset is more impactful. In 5 years, the magic of GPT4 fades to the background and we take it granted i.e. reversion to the mean analogy: having a smart phone is baseline but as kids, if you were told you would have a computer in your hand, we'd call it magic

My initial gut reaction says AI is about to permeate all digital products so we will likely have less long term brand durability for knowing which AI is responsible for what. But if Apple’s headset = iPhone not = pencil, a device we use to physically experience things in a new way will have more brand durability.

GPT-4. Apple VR may expand or even define category, but I think Oculus is close enough that Apple’s product won’t be seen as revolutionary as iPhone, for instance. Parallel would be if Android had come out first.

that's tough, headset has been a mechanical/balance "marlin". I suppose a spec of the materials would be pretty exciting if it goes beyond metal/acrylic.

gpt-4 . I've seen family members (not in tech) make it an indispensable part of their life - they are not going to strap a brick to their face.

There are always exceptions to the rule, but in general, software tends to be more expansive and impactful than hardware. Again, exceptions exist, but the greatest hardware typically struggles to find market fit without solid software to power it.

Scenario: AI is critical to the success of a wearable, by enabling a natural language interface, and for AR, by enabling generative graphics. Today AI is a fun proof of concept for nerds, but Apple Headset is the device that puts AI into everyday people’s lives. GPT & AI are the CPU, but Headset is the Apple II.

GPT-X is a technology, not a product. Everyone remembers Tesla, not the ML software enabling autopilot. No one outside IT knows what big query (or large distributed systems) is, but everyone knows Google. Masses don’t recognize technologies, they remember products.
