What's one thing that's confusing about Farcaster?

We should do a better job explaining. I don't think most people care about old casts? It's a 5-10% of users that really care about preserving everything.

I think there's a general expectation that casts are permanent, just because that's how it's always worked on most other platforms. Most people don't care about old casts until they realize that one cast they had bookmarked from years ago disappeared unexpectedly - then they'll care.

I didn't know this, and will have to figure out to preserve casts that meet certain criteria (for both my own casts and our users)

It seems like throwing away a lot of value to not have that data permanently accessible. Maybe users could opt-in to have their history stored in exchange for licensing it for future AI model training. https://www.reuters.com/technology/reddit-ai-content-licensing-deal-with-google-sources-say-2024-02-22/

If we are stacked as a mofo on storage are we good? Storage is size based right? Or is preservation time based? If I have 25k casts worth of storage is that no good after a year Lil confused now

Fascinating On Twitter some users delete their old tweets For me, there’s always that one super successful tweet from years ago that I point to for the clout

I am the 5-10%, I see knowledge as a multi-generational heirloom that will now be possible to anyone to preserve and hand down (not to mention sell for training data or use for their own knowledge systems)

Assuming Farcaster becomes valuable enough, someone will create the wayback machine equivalent

From an artist legacy pov if future historians want to learn more about the artist they’re studying they’ll look at past postings because that’s where we share process, intent, meaning etc. The auto delete removes that history. Maybe offer legacy accounts to those that want to keep everything?

Reading the replies it sounds like I’m part of the 5-10% who don’t care about what I casted last year. I don’t think we need to save everything for eternity.

feel free to get rid of all my 🍖 casts within a week I don’t think it’s necessary to store everything forever, but possibly having people pay in warps per cast to save it for a duration of time could be a nice feature for some

I’m in that 5-15%. What’s crucial to me is that I own it, not a 3rd party like X, IG, FB etc. All that stuff is stuff I wish I could just have erased permanently but Zuck is prob using all that stuff from over the decades to train his AIs for Meta or whatever his plans for future proofing his $/legacy are.

Blockchain tech is all about preservation so it's pretty ironic that a social media platform all about blockchain tech is designed to delete posts after a year. Also that's a pretty heavy assumption (5-10%), did you guys do a survey?

I care about all casts, and have a desire to document the past. Some of my old tweets on twitter were really important to me, it showed predictions about the future

Idk Dan I recall you saying something g along the lines of “show me the tweet” or “show me the cast” referring to some years long prediction. I’m incredibly stoked that mega old casts have the potential to be indexed

With everything else I do mostly on chain I personally think I like the fact that my casts I do are ephemeral. Why would I want to keep all my replies tipping out my degen everyday. While I’m much in favour of backing things up, I do believe the ephemerality is a feature not a bug
